Suzuki has equipped its Grand Vitara with four-wheel independent suspension, which makes for a nice ride on normal roads. There are literally no other vehicles in the GV's price class that offer true four-wheel drive and an independent rear axle. That makes the Suzuki a very unique vehicle in a market full of CR-Vs, RAV4s and Escapes, which are all based on front-wheel drive architecture. Models like the Jeep Liberty have a live axle at the rear, which compromises road manners for off-road credentials and a lower cost. The Grand Vitara is also able to be flat-towed, as it is equipped with a neutral setting on its electronic transfer case.

Some of the blame for that weighty feeling comes from the fact that the Grand Vitara is one of the few compact sport-utilities that has any real off-road credentials. The old version was surprisingly excellent off-road, with rock-climbing capabilities that belied its looks.
The new one also features low-range gears for serious off-roading. This time, though, you engage low range with a simple twist of a knob on the dashboard instead of having to ram the gears home with a lever.

The other vehicles that come to mind are the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander. But these are vehicles that have all-wheel drive systems that aren't built for much more than a dirt road. The Grand Vitara is built on a rear-wheel-drive platform and is available with four-wheel drive, not just all-wheel drive. The difference is in its added low-range gearing. This allows the Grand Vitara to climb or descend steep inclines and navigate rocky terrain without destroying its drivetrain. It is properly equipped with steel suspension arms rather than aluminum, and the engine compartment is configured in a way that a muddy river at the door bottoms won't damage it.

In a recent trip to Canada to testdrive the '06 Suzuki Grand Vitara, we realized that most of the OEMs are destroying what we know and love about 4x4s. Suzuki is a company that made a very capable off- road vehicle in the past, the Samurai, and in fact still offers a current version of it in other parts of the world (with the classic Jimney nameplate, airbags, and two coil-sprung solid axles), but all we get in the states is the fully independent-suspended, ground-clearance lacking, Grand Vitara (GV) and claim it to be an Off Road Athlete. Don't get us wrong, the Grand Vitara is a valuable contender in the Soft-Roaders class, which includes the Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4, and Jeep Liberty, but most of those vehicles are more destined to a life being towed behind motorhomes or driven by soccer moms than one in the dirt

Two AWD systems are available for the Suzuki Grand Vitara; a single-mode, all-wheel-drive system or a four-wheel-drive system called Four-Mode that offers both low-range gearing and a traction-locking system. There are several more efficient and better-riding alternatives, but the extra comfort will cost you more. If you can do without extreme off-road chops, the Subaru Forester provides a comfortable ride with capable all-wheel drive, and costs only about $2,000 more than the Grand Vitara.
