The thermovalve, thermoelement built-in, controls the coolant flow by sensing the coolant temperature, mainly used for warming up the intake manifold(passage of air & fuel mixture to the combustion room) installed in the engine coolant circuit.
Flow of coolant(hot water) to the intake manifold warms it , accelerates vaporization, normalizes combustion early and reduces CO and HC emission.
Some are used for prevention of icing (particles of vapor freeze and bring a dull performance) in carburetors. But constant flow of coolant,especially in hot open air in summer,warms the intake manifold excessively, then mixture gas of air&fuel expands and results in the fall of engine efficiency due to the reduction of intake air. In order to prevent the above, the thermovalve flows coolant until engine fully being warmed up , then stops the flow by sensing a higher coolant temperature.
